My name is Steve Atherton.  I am a Christian Minister and Attorney.  For many years, both before I met Christ and since, I have studied government, most of the time with great dismay.  Before meeting Christ, my studies led me increasingly down a radical path, beginning as a liberal Democrat and continuing past Socialism and Marxism into Anarchism.  The minister who led me to the Lord back in 1991 still enjoys saying: “Steve, you were so far to the left that all I had to do was push you and you ended up right!”

In any case, when I met Christ back in 1991 I was an attorney from New York City who believed that Christ and Him crucified was the least likely thing to be true in the entire universe.  Much to my surprise and great joy, Christ had other plans for me.  Immediately upon meeting Christ – an event that occurred in a little white farm house by a covered bridge in Vermont – I began to devour His Word.  His Word was pure water to my thirsty soul.

Shortly after coming to Christ, I read the U.S. Constitution for the first time.  Mind you, I was already an attorney and had received the highest Constitutional Law grade in my first year class at Georgetown University Law Center.  Nonetheless, the sad truth is it had never been required of me or my peers (insofar as I know) to read the actual text of the Constitution from beginning to end.  As I began to read, I was shocked.  Contrary to my pre-conceived notions, the Constitution turned out to be a liberty loving plan of government rather than a document of tyranny as I had supposed.

To many who read this blog, these sentiments will seem shocking.  I share them because they may give you some insight as to how many people think about this country and faith in Christ.

For those who read this who believe as I did prior to my meeting Christ, I hope that you will browse through the site and share your comments in a thoughtful and respectful manner.  You need not agree.  God gives each man a free will to believe what he wants to believe and our Constitution enshrines that freedom.

To my fellow Christians, I know that many of my letters and/or articles are a departure from how you have looked at the relationship between God and government.  I hope that you will give the points that I make prayerful consideration and that you will be respectful of those who hold differing views.  This blog is simply a place for us all, believer and unbeliever alike, to carry on a conversation that our nation’s founders began more than two hundred years ago.
